Carpe Diem School was officially inaugurated on the 6th of August 2000 by the then acting minister of Education, Mrs Hellen Zille. Before this there was no school available for learners with intellectual-, physical or learning impairments other than the schools of skill which caters for the higher functioning older learners. Therefore, lower functioning learners had to go on to Cape Town from a very young age for accessible education.
The school building, the previous premises of Kruinsig Industrial School, had to undergo extensive modifications and repair for the establishment of the wonderful and accessible facility that is Carpe Diem School today.
Helen Zille.
